SUPER Easy Video Games, Alternate Spider-Man is MORE Popular, And other Signs | Week In Nerdom

Metal, Monsters, and Mayhem: Your Weekly Geek Culture Fix!
Welcome back, noise fiends, pixel warriors, and page-turners! It's been another packed week in the worlds we love, from ear-splitting new tracks and tour announcements to gaming updates, comic book chaos, and screen thrills (and spills). Grab your beverage of choice, crank the volume (or don't, your neighbors might complain), and let's dive into the latest happenings.

Music: Riffs, Roars, and Road Warriors
New Music & Multimedia Mayhem:

GWAR Celebrates 40 Years of Scumdog Villainy: Brace yourselves! Our favorite interplanetary overlords, GWAR, are marking their 40th anniversary not just with music, but with "The Return of the Gor-Gor," a multimedia extravaganza dropping July 25th. This beast includes both a new record and a graphic novel chronicling the saga of Gor-Gor, the band's infamous three-ton T-Rex. Get a taste of the carnage with the newly released track "Lot Lizard." Forty years and still the undisputed masters of shock rock spectacle! (Blabbermouth)

Byzantine Unleashes "Harbingers": Stalwarts of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal, Byzantine, are set to drop their latest full-length album, "Harbingers," on June 13th via Metal Blade Records. If the crushing first single, "Floating Chrysanthema," is any indication, we're in for a technically brilliant and brutally heavy treat. Check out the video now! (YouTube)

Tours & Festivals: Get Ready to Mosh!

Metal Gods Meet Shock Rock Royalty: Prepare for an epic clash of titans! Judas Priest and Alice Cooper are hitting the road together this fall, bringing legendary riffs and theatrical horror. As if that wasn't enough, the mighty Corrosion of Conformity is providing support. The tour kicks off in Biloxi, MS on September 16th and wraps up in Houston, TX on October 26th. Get your tickets now! (Judas Priest Tour Dates)

New England Metal and Hardcore Fest Returns: Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 20th! The legendary New England Metal and Hardcore Fest is back at The Palladium Outdoors in Worcester, MA. This year boasts headliners Lorna Shore, Cannibal Corpse, and Kublai Khan TX. But the stacked lineup doesn't stop there – catch Madball, Shadow of Intent, and, in what's rumored to be their final show ever, Bury Your Dead! Don't miss this potentially historic moment. (NEMHF Website)

Regular 'Ol Music News:

Sight for Sound: Helping Bands See the Stage: Pat Sheridan, guitarist for the crushing Fit For An Autopsy, is also doing amazing work off-stage as Director of Partnerships for NEVEN Eyewear. He's launched the Sight for Sound Initiative, providing FREE prescription and non-prescription eyewear to qualifying US-based touring bands and crew who play 75+ shows a year. A fantastic initiative supporting the artists who bring us the music we love. (Loudwire, NEVEN)

Weezer Plays On Amidst Personal Turmoil: In some unsettling news, Weezer bassist Scott Shriner's wife, Jillian Lauren, was recently involved in a police shootout and subsequently arrested on attempted murder charges. She has since been released on a $1 million bond. Despite this incredibly difficult personal situation for Shriner, Weezer fulfilled their commitment to play Coachella just days later. (Loudwire)

Another Tour, Another Drummer Down: The trend continues. A Killer's Confession has parted ways with drummer Kegan King mid-tour, joining a growing list of bands facing lineup changes on the road. Stepping in behind the kit is Daniel Fox, who previously played with Mushroomhead. (MetalSucks)

This Week's Crushing Suggestion:

Cytotoxin - Biographyte: If you crave tech-death that feels like being pulverized by complex, intelligent machinery, look no further. This album is relentless, intricate, and utterly devastating. Highly recommended for fans of extreme precision and brutality.

Gaming & Tech: Updates, Trailers, and Streaming Wars
Follow-ups & Corrections:

Nintendo Switch 2 Controller Clarification: Remember those cool Gamecube-style controllers rumored for the Switch 2? Turns out, they'll only work with Gamecube titles accessed through the premium "Gamecube Classics" tier of Nintendo Switch Online's Virtual Console. So, temper those universal controller dreams slightly.

Death Stranding 2 Offers Boss Battle Skip: Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding 2 will introduce an interesting feature, likely for lower difficulties. If you fail a boss battle, you'll reportedly have the option to skip it. The game will then provide a text-based summary of the fight's outcome and proceed with the story, skipping the post-battle cutscene as well. An accessibility feature, or a way to bypass frustration? You decide. (ComicBook Gaming)

Marvel VS Capcom Collections Get Major Update: As of April 16th, Capcom has rolled out a significant free update for both Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics and the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. Key additions include local versus mode for all games, specific competitive build options for X-Men vs. Street Fighter, menu button tweaks to prevent accidental pauses, and new gallery art/music. Great news for fighting game fans! (ComicBook Gaming)

Trailers & New Releases:

Marathon Gameplay Reveal: Bungie's revival of Marathon dropped a gameplay trailer, and it's looking slick! This sci-fi extraction shooter is slated for a September 23rd release. However, it's confirmed not to be free-to-play. In an era dominated by F2P models and microtransactions, will a premium price tag hinder its success? Time will tell. (YouTube)

Regular 'Ol Tech News:

Patreon Dips Toes into Livestreaming: The popular creator platform Patreon is currently testing native livestreaming features, with a wider rollout planned for this summer. Future plans include OBS integration and options for creators to offer VOD downloads as individual purchases or even gifts. This could be a game-changer for creators looking to consolidate their platforms. (Engadget)

This Week's Gaming Suggestion:

Marvel VS Capcom: Fighting Collection Arcade Classics: If you have any nostalgia for the quarter-munching days of arcade fighters or want to experience the roots of hyper-kinetic tag-team chaos, this collection is a must. Bundling seven essential titles like X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes, and the legendary Marvel vs. Capcom 2, it's been modernized with rollback netcode for online play, training modes, and a museum packed with art and music (plus the new VS modes mentioned above!). It's the definitive, convenient way to play these influential 2D fighters on modern systems.

Comics & Books: Ink, Ideas, and Apocalypses
Follow-ups & Corrections:

Ultimate Spider-Man Continues to Dominate: The March sales numbers are in, and Ultimate Spider-Man is proving to be a massive success, holding two of the top three graphic novel spots. Meanwhile, Amazing Spider-Man didn't even crack the top 20. Seems Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto struck gold, and maybe, just maybe, Marvel Exec Tom Brevoort does know a thing or two about what sells. (Bounding Into Comics)

Regular 'Ol Comics News:

Werewolf By Night Returns... in Comic Form: The anticipated sequel to the well-received Disney+ Werewolf By Night special feature won't be hitting the streaming service. Instead, it's being developed as a comic book series, still penned by director Michael Giacchino. As Tom Brevoort suggests, comics often serve as the "idea factories" for live-action, so this could still pave the way for future screen appearances. (Cosmic Book News)

Godzilla Set to Destroy the Marvel Universe (Again?): Following last year's apparently successful Godzilla VS Marvel, the King of the Monsters is back for more crossover carnage in "Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe." This new 5-issue mini-series, written by Gerry Duggan with art by Javier Garron, kicks off in July. If it makes money, why not, right? (Cosmic Book News)

Grant Morrison Teases Big 2 Return: Legendary and often enigmatic comic writer Grant Morrison has revealed they are returning to work for one of the "Big 2" (Marvel or DC). They described the project as an "unexpected" team-up with an artist they "love dearly." Expect a formal announcement soon! (ComicBook Comics)

Rebel Moon Gets a Prequel Comic: Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon universe expands further with "Rebel Moon: Nemesis," a prequel comic published by Titan Comics, hitting shelves July 16th. Written by the notable Gail Simone with art by Federico Bertoni, the book delves into the origin story of the titular character, Nemesis. (ComicBook Comics)

This Week's Comic Suggestion:

East of West (Image Comics, 2013-2019): Dive into Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta's sprawling sci-fi western epic. Set in a dystopian alternate America fractured into seven nations after the Civil War, the story reimagines the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as powerful figures manipulating events – but Death has gone rogue. Expect dense world-building, intricate political maneuvering, stylishly brutal action, and that signature Hickman complexity. A truly unique and rewarding read.

TV Shows: Confirmations, Crossovers, and Creepy Comedy
Follow-ups & Corrections:

The Last of Us Season 3 Confirmed: No surprise here, but great news nonetheless. HBO has officially confirmed that the critically acclaimed adaptation of The Last of Us will return for a third season. (Engadget)

Ghostbusters Animated Series Gets Top-Tier Studio: The upcoming animated Ghostbusters series on Netflix has locked in its animation house: Flying Bark Productions. This is the acclaimed studio behind Rise of the TMNT, Marvel's What If...?, and the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender movie featuring Aang. High expectations for the visual style! (ComicBook Anime)

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Dated: Get ready for more Hell's Kitchen justice (again)! Daredevil: Born Again has already secured a second season, slated to premiere in March 2026.

It's Always Sunny Returns with a Crossover: The gang is back! It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 premieres on July 9th. Get ready for more depravity, and intriguingly, this season will feature a crossover episode with Abbott Elementary. This should be... interesting. (Variety)

Trailers:

Murderbot Debuts: Check out the trailer for Murderbot, a new sci-fi comedy series starring Alexander Skarsgård as a security android who just wants to be left alone to watch soap operas. Based on Martha Wells' beloved book series, it lands on Apple TV+ on May 16th. (YouTube)

This Week's TV Suggestion:

Penny Dreadful (Showtime, 2014-2016): Immerse yourself in this dark, atmospheric gothic horror series. Set in Victorian London, it weaves together iconic literary characters like Dr. Frankenstein and his Creature, Dorian Gray, Dracula, and werewolves into a complex tapestry of supernatural threats and personal demons. Led by a powerhouse performance from Eva Green, the show blends literary horror with psychological drama, resulting in a bloody, operatic, and utterly captivating viewing experience.

Movies: Sequels, Scares, and Stephen King
Follow-ups & Corrections:

Minecraft 2 Officially Greenlit: Build hype! A sequel to the Minecraft movie has been officially given the green light.

Trailers:

Life of Chuck Trailer Arrives: Based on a Stephen King short story, Life of Chuck boasts an impressive cast led by Tom Hiddleston, alongside Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Karen Gillan. The poignant trailer hints at a unique narrative structure exploring a man's life in reverse as the world ends. Directed by Mike Flanagan, it's out this June. (YouTube)

Regular 'Ol Movie News:

Star Wars Venturing into Horror: A potentially exciting development: Lucasfilm is reportedly developing a HORROR project set within the Star Wars universe. It's unclear whether this will be a movie or a Disney+ series, but the prospect of genuine scares in a galaxy far, far away is intriguing. (Cosmic Book News)

Godzilla X Kong Sequel Adds Sam Neill: The MonsterVerse continues to expand! The sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has added veteran actor Sam Neill to its already stacked cast, which includes Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Dan Stevens, Mathew Modine, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Delroy Lindo. Plot details are scarce beyond a "cataclysmic world-ending threat," but expect more giant monster mayhem on March 26, 2027. (Cosmic Book News)

This Week's Movie Suggestion:

Pacific Rim (2013): Sometimes, you just need giant robots punching giant interdimensional monsters. Guillermo del Toro delivered exactly that with Pacific Rim. When monstrous Kaiju emerge from a deep-sea rift, humanity builds massive Jaegers, piloted by neurally-linked duos, to fight back. It's a visually stunning, utterly earnest love letter to the mecha and kaiju genres that doesn't waste time pretending to be high art – it just delivers pure, large-scale, awesome spectacle.

The Rumor Mill & Speculation Station
Disclaimer: It's rumor time! Treat everything below with a healthy dose of skepticism until officially confirmed.

Confirmations/Refutations:

Harry Potter Series Casting: Some key roles for the upcoming Max Harry Potter series have reportedly been filled: John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. Interesting choices if true!

New Sources/Whispers:

Killer Klowns Reboot Buzz: The long-rumored Killer Klowns from Outer Space reboot/sequel is back in the conversation, this time with Ryan Gosling potentially attached... as a producer? Stranger things have happened.

Fresh Rumors:

Doctor Who Turbulence? Following recent ratings figures, whispers suggest Doctor Who might be heading for a cancellation or, more likely, a significant pause. Rumors claim Disney is pushing for a showrunner change, Ncuti Gatwa wants out, and current showrunner Russell T Davies himself has hinted at a hiatus. Could this be more serious than initially thought?

Tomb Raider Series Dead at Amazon? Is the planned Tomb Raider series DOA at Amazon? Chatter suggests changes following Jennifer Salke's reported ouster, potentially affecting Phoebe Waller-Bridge's role as well.

Stargate Revival at Amazon? Conversely, Salke's departure might be good news for Stargate fans. Rumors suggest a new series (reboot? sequel?) is now in early development at Amazon, with Salke previously being a roadblock.

Playstation's Next Gen Strategy: Could Sony be targeting the hybrid market? Rumors point towards a two-tiered next-gen Playstation strategy: a traditional home console and a dedicated handheld console.

Switch 2 Pre-Orders Imminent? Whispers suggest Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders could go live in the USA and Canada as early as the 23rd. Keep an eye out!

Fortnite Crossover Bonanza: Leaks suggest a massive wave of upcoming Fortnite crossovers: Jack Black (as himself!), Tony Hawk (with a potential Pro Skater 3+4 event tie-in), more Mortal Kombat characters (Shang Tsung implied?), Death Stranding, Marvel, Double Dragon, Doom: The Dark Ages, Hitman, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and the NBA. Whew!

Fallout 3 Remake Still Distant: Don't hold your breath for the rumored Fallout 3 remake; word is it's still a long way off.

Mortal Kombat 1 Future: Kombat Pack 3 might be off the table for MK1, but rumors suggest a second story expansion could be in the works instead.

Always Sunny Guest Star? Could Brad Pitt be making a guest appearance in the upcoming season of It's Always Sunny? That would certainly be... something.

Author's Speculation Corner:

Fantastic Four: First Steps Forecast: Call me pessimistic, but the buzz around Marvel's Fantastic Four: First Steps isn't inspiring confidence. Initial predictions of "mid" might have been generous. Recent rumors and industry reports paint a potentially bleak picture for Marvel's first family's MCU debut. I suspect this one might underperform significantly.

MK1 Story DLC Prediction: Yes, I think the rumors are true – we will get another story DLC for MK1. My hope? It focuses purely on MK characters (maybe 3 new ones?) and leaves the guest characters out this time. Let the Mortal Kombat universe breathe!

That's a wrap for this week! What news has you hyped? What rumors do you think hold water? Let us know in the comments below! Until next time, keep it loud, keep it geeky

Follow-ups/Corrections

Nintendo Switch 2 - Those killer Camecube recreated controllers will ONLY be usable with Gamecube games that will only be available through the “Gamecube Classics” tier of the online virtual console.

Death Stranding 2 - New functionality (presumably for the easiest difficulties) that will allow players to essentially skip boss battles. Once a battle has been lost, there will be an option to skip. In which case the game will provide text like a novel of the battle and move on with the story. This option will also skip the following cutscene that would have played after the boss was defeated. https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/death-stranding-2-boss-fights-reward/

Marvel VS Capcom -  Available as of April 16, Capcom is updating BOTH fighting collections. There will now be a versus mode for all games, X-Men vs Street Fighter will give the option to play in one of the 3 competitive builds, new menu button options to help avoid opening menus in the middle of a match, plus new art and music.

Suggests

Marvel VS Capcom: Fighting Collection Arcade Classics - If you've got any interest in the roots of hyperactive tag-team fighters, or just have some nostalgia for pumping quarters into cabinets back in the day, this is probably on your radar. It bundles seven games, including essentials like X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes, and the notoriously chaotic Marvel vs. Capcom 2. They've added modern necessities like online play with rollback netcode, training modes, and a museum feature with art and music, along with the new VS modes. It's basically a convenient, legal way to access these arcade classics on current hardware without the usual hassle. If you appreciate that specific era of 2D fighters or just want to see where a lot of the genre's mechanics got their start, it's a solid pickup. Saves you time tracking them down individually, anyway.

Comic Books/Books

Follow-ups/Corrections

Ultimate Spider-Man - The March numbers are in. Ultimate Spider-Man holds 2 of the top 3 spots, while Amazing Spider-Man didn’t even break the top 20. Tom Brevoort REALLY knows what he’s talking about.

Reg ‘ol News

Werewolf By Night - the sequel to the Disney+ special feature is set to be a comic book. Still with Michael Giacchino writing now instead of directing. But as Tom Brevoort has told us, the comics are the idea factories for the live action stuff, so who knows where this will lead.

https://cosmicbook.news/marvel-ditches-disney-plus-werewolf-by-night-comic

Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe - Follow up to the fairly successful Godzilla VS Marvel from last year, this new 5 book mini starts in July. I guess if it made a little bit of money then SURE! Gerry Duggan (w) Javier Garron (a)

https://cosmicbook.news/godzilla-destroys-marvel-universe-comic-event

Grant Morrison - The prolific comic book author has revealed a return to one of the Big 2, with a proper announcement to come soon. Morrison said that the team up would be “unexpected” but was with an artist that they “love dearly.”

Rebel Moon - The Snyder fanboys are gunna love this. The not-Star Wars series is getting a prequel comic book in Rebel Moon: Nemesis, published by Titan Comics. On shelves July 16 from writer Gail Simone (eek) and artist Federico Bertoni. The book is the origin story of the titular character.

Suggests

East of West (Image Comics, 2013-2019): Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta. Sci-fi western apocalypse deal with the Four Horsemen reimagined. Dense world-building, typical Hickman complexity. It's a sci-fi western set in a dystopian, alternate-history America where the Civil War fractured the country into seven warring nations. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are real, powerful figures manipulating events towards the end times, but Death has gone rogue. Dense world-building, political intrigue, stylish violence.

Trailers

Murderbot - https://youtu.be/vEioDeOiqEs?si=8NNYWINyyK51fA-1 Alexander Skarsgard comedy on Apple TV+. May 16.

Suggests

Penny Dreadful (Showtime, 2014-2016): Gothic horror mashup featuring characters from Victorian literature like Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Dracula. Very atmospheric, strong performances, not afraid to get bloody or operatic. Eva Green carried a lot of it. Victorian London, but all the classic gothic horror characters – Frankenstein's monster, Dracula, Dorian Gray, werewolves – are real and crossing paths. A mysterious woman, played intensely by Eva Green, teams up with an American gunman and an explorer to fight the supernatural darkness threatening the city and their own souls. It's atmospheric, literary, bloody, and focused on character psychodrama as much as the monsters. Basically, public domain horror figures in a serious, dark prestige drama.

Suggests

Pacific Rim (2013): Guillermo del Toro directing giant robots punching giant monsters from another dimension. It's exactly what it sounds like. Visually impressive, earnest love letter to mecha and kaiju genres. Doesn't pretend to be high art, just delivers the goods. Giant monsters called Kaiju crawl out of a dimensional rift in the ocean to wreck our cities. Humanity's response? Build equally giant robots called Jaegers, controlled by two pilots sharing a neural link, to punch them back into oblivion. It's Guillermo del Toro indulging his love for big mechs and bigger monsters. Pure, large-scale spectacle. Doesn't overthink it, just delivers on the premise.

Rumor Mill

Confirmations/Refutations

Harry Potter - Cast confirmations: John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid.

New Sources

Killer Klowns from Outer Space - the reboot movie is back in the rumor mill, this time with Ryan Gosling attached to produce?

New Rumors

Dr. Who - After the numbers came out, it seems that there are now rumors hinting at the cancellation of the show. Maybe more appropriately, a pause of the show. Disney is reportedly demanding a new showrunner, and Actor Ncuti Gatwa wants out. Current showrunner Russel T Davies has already hinted at a hiatus… could this be bigger than he is insinuating?

Tomb Raider - Dead at Amazon? Jennifer Salke was supposed to produce. Phoebe Waller-Bridge being demoted?

Stargate - New Stargate show (reboot? Lega-sequel? Normal sequel) said to be in early development at Amazon with the ouster of Jennifer Salke. She was reportedly the main reason this didn’t happen sooner.

Playstation - Word is the next generation for Sony will be 2-tiered: The home console and a handheld console. Going after the Hybrid market that Nintendo has created/cornered.

Nintendo Switch 2 - pre-orders are rumored to go live in the USA and Canada on the 23rd.

Fortnite - Leaked crossovers with Jack Black (as Jack Black NOT Steve), Tony Hawk, MORE Mortal Kombat characters (seemingly implying Shang Tsung), Death Stranding, Marvel, Double Dragon, Doom: The Dark Ages, Hitman, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and the NBA. PLUS a probable Tony Hawk event to correspond with the release of Pro Skater 3 + 4.

Fallout 3 - the remake is still a LONG way off.

MK1 - KP3 might not be coming BUT a second story expansion seems to possibly be in the works.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Brad Pitt to guest in an episode this season???

SPECULATION

Fantastic Four: First Steps - Is going to underperform. I said in my prediction for the year that it would be mid, but now it seems that even was a bit of an overstatement. All rumors, and Deadlines articles, of late are painting a much more bleak picture for the future of the first family.

MK1 - Yes I think we WILL be getting another story DLC. this time with 3 MK characters and NO guests… i hope.
